A professional business card is one of the most important tools for making a strong first impression. Whether you’re networking, meeting potential clients, or promoting your business, the right design & finish can help you stand out. Standard business cards are typically sized at 2” x 3.5”, making them easy to carry and store.
At Printing By Johnson, we work with a wide range of clients—from real estate agents and towing companies to car dealerships and entrepreneurs. We've seen firsthand what makes a business card look truly professional. Printing By Johnson has the information to share.
Here’s what you need to know.
Keep Your Business Card Design Clean and Easy to Read
Some of the most common mistakes we see are poor font choice and cluttered layouts. A business card should be simple, clear, and easy to read at a glance.
If someone has to stop and figure out your card, it’s not doing its job.
Use Strong Visual Hierarchy
A professional business card should guide the viewer’s eye.
Your most important information should stand out immediately:
Business name or logo
Your name and title
Contact information
We often help customers adjust their layouts so everything flows properly and appears more polished, professional, clean and easy to read.
Don’t Ignore Margins and Spacing
Margins are one of the most overlooked parts of business card design—but they’re critical. All critical elements should be kept at least .125" (1/8") inside the trim edge to prevent anything from being cut off during trimming.
If text is too close to the edge, it can get cut off during printing. Proper spacing ensures your card looks clean and nothing important is lost.
Even a great design can look unprofessional if it’s not set up correctly for print.
Use High-Quality Images and Logos
Low-quality images and logos are one of the fastest ways to make a card look unprofessional.
We recommend:
High-resolution logos
Avoiding screenshots, compressed images or stretching images
Making sure your files are print-ready—but what does that actually mean?
What looks good on a screen doesn’t always translate well to print.
Choose the Right Business Card Material and Finish
The feel of your business card matters just as much as the design.
Some popular options include:
Matte finish – smooth, non-glare, fingerprint-resistant
Gloss finish – vibrant and eye-catching
Premium cardstock – thicker and more durable (14pt, 16pt, 100#)
When it comes to paper weight, you may see both points (pt) and pounds (#) used. Pounds refer to the weight of the paper, while points refer to the actual thickness. For business cards, thickness (pt) is what really determines how sturdy and high-quality the card feels in your hand.
These details help your card stand out and feel more professional.
For an even more premium look and feel, we also offer options like suede (soft-touch) lamination, foiling, raised ink, and embossing—perfect for adding texture, depth, and a high-end finish to your business cards.
Follow Proper Print Guidelines
Designing for print is different than designing for digital, and this is where many issues happen. Start your design with print in mind.
We regularly help customers:
Fix margins and layout issues
Adjust colors for accurate printing
Ensure files are set up correctly, including proper bleed and crop marks
The purpose of a bleed is to extend a color, image, or design beyond the trim edge. Due to slight shifting during the trimming and printing process, a 1/8" (.125") bleed is required to prevent unwanted white edges and ensure a clean, professional final piece.
Crop marks are also essential when setting up print-ready files. These are lines that indicate where the paper should be cut to achieve the correct finished size, helping ensure accuracy and consistency in the final product.
Even if you already have a design, making sure it’s print-ready is key to getting the best result. Refer to our print guidelines for more information on "print-ready".
